Among all the other great benefits of caffeine, scientists at Indiana University have identified 24 compounds, including caffeine, with the potential to boost an enzyme in the brain—nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyl transferase 2, or NMNAT2—shown to protect against dementia. The new study, "Screening with an NMNAT2-MSD Platform Identifies Small Molecules That Modulate NMNAT2 Levels in Cortical Neurons," appears in Scientific Reports.
